What happens if I drop my computer?

Posted by

Of course, one sure way to break a computer is by dropping it, but many people wonder what actually happens to the computer when it gets dropped that makes it stop working. There are a number of different issues that can arise, with the most simple being screen and case damage. If the case becomes damaged, you may also be facing the chance of a part of the motherboard being broken off, making the computer irrepairable. The most common issue, however, is hard drive failure.
The hard drive in your computer is the part that stores both your personal files, and the files needed to boot the computer and run an operating system such as Microsoft Windows. The hard drive is also the most delecate part of the computer. It works a bit like a traditional record player, but on a microscopic level. A small arm moves back and forth, the end of which contains a device that can change the polarity of molecules on the platter, the surface that the arm moves over. Because the data on the platter is stored so densely, any damage to it can cause failure. When the computer is dropped, it’s possble that the arm can scratch the platter, making it difficult for the computer to read. As the drive continues to be used, the scratch will become deeper, eventually causing failure. The hard drive will often make some noise if this is about to happen — see our article about noises your computer might make.

So, what do I do?

First and foremost, turn it off. This is one of the rare cases where it is OK to turn your computer off immediately by holding down the power button. Since Windows will try to write a bunch of information out to the hard drive during the shutdown process, it is good to just skip that in this case. You should not do this if your drive is not failing.
Don’t turn it back on. No matter how bad you need your data, turning the computer or drive back on will only increase your chance of irrecoverable data loss.
Protect the computer. Since the computer can’t be used anyway, take it and put it somewhere that it will be protected from any further shocks. If you have a padded case, put it in there. If your comfortable with removing the hard drive, you can take it out and put it in a padded container. Otherwise, I recommend puting it somewhere on the floor, but where it won’t get stepped on, like under your bed.
Bring it to a professional. Data recovery is a complicated task. This is why you should carefully bring your computer to a professional to have it looked at. South City Computer has an in-house data recovery specialist that can diagnose your issue and help you recover your data. We use advanced imaging technologies to pull raw data off the drive if necessary. We can then search this data for your important files. We also have specialists that can replace your hard drive with a new one and move your files over.
Don’t let a drop cause data loss in the first place! We offer comprehensive backup and recovery plans that eliminate the need for data recovery in case of a failure. We have some more information here, but you can also give us a call at 314-400-7918 for more information and to sign up.

Is it time to TOTAL your computer?

Posted by

Is it time to say goodbye to your computer?Depending on the age and value of a computer, sometimes a repair is just not worth it. Many people buy cheap bargain computers from retailers like Best-Buy, Micro-Center, or OfficeMax. While these computers may have come at a seemingly great deal, eventually you might have to ask yourself; “Is this computer worth the cost of the repair?” Computers can be totaled just like a car after an accident or major malfunction. At some point most computers will experience a hardware or software malfunction where the repair cost could exceed the actual value of the computer. Many people who come into South City Computer for our expert computer repair services want to know if they should move forward with the cost of the repair, or if they should just total their computer and look at a new computer purchase.

5 of the most common issues that total a computer

Motherboard

Most computers can be considered “totaled” if the motherboard starts to malfunction. This can be caused for a variety of reasons. The most common reason is the capacitors on the motherboard will begin to bulge and leak. This is not an easy repair, and will most likely require the entire motherboard to be replaced on the computer. Think of the motherboard like the engine in your car, usually if your engine locks up or seriously malfunctions, you would probably not pay to replace the engine and would seek to purchase another car.

Broken/Shattered Screen

While it seems silly to throw away a laptop just because the screen is shattered or goes dark, usually the price of repairing a screen is more than just putting that money toward a replacement laptop computer. A replacement screen will vary depending on the computer. The cost of the labor to replace a screen, while reasonable, can make the cost of the repair more than the value of the computer.

Viruses and Rootkits

On older computers having viruses and/or a rootkit is almost a fact of life. A computer that is infected with viruses and/or a rootkit is usually repairable, but if the computer is old this service may be too costly to invest in an old computer. You can usually determine whether your computer is too old for this repair by looking at the version of Windows running on it. If it is at least 2 versions behind, you probably don’t want to spend a lot of money on a total operating system repair.

Broken or Failing Power Jack

The point where the computer attaches to the power supply, known as the DC jack, sometimes becomes a point of failure on a laptop computer. On most laptops the DC jack is usually connected directly to the motherboard and the force and movement exerted from plugging and unplugging the power supply usually breaks this off of the motherboard. You may notice the power jack wiggles around when it plugs in, and may turn off and on when the computer is moved. There usually is no easy fix for this, and will cause the entire motherboard to need to be replaced.

Broken/Dead Hard Drive

No Operating System Found? Eventually the hard drive on your computer may die. Unfortunately on almost all newer computers the Windows recovery partition is included on the hard drive, and becomes un-recoverable after the hard drive dies. Windows 8 computers do not even have a license key on the outside of the computer anymore, and if the hard drive dies, you have to pay to replace the hard drive and re-purchase Windows 8.

A replacement hard drive will vary in price based on the size and speed of the hard drive. The real cost comes into the cost of the replacement Windows operating system and the time it takes to re-install and re-setup the Windows operating system.

Some older computers have a recovery CD that comes with the computer or can be ordered from the computer manufacturer. These CD’s are usually not too costly, but can take time to get. Since time is money you may have to consider is the computer worth the wait or should you just purchase a replacement.

Ultimately there is no one size fits all way to figure out if your computer should be totaled, or incur the cost of a repair. Essentially it is based on the value you place on your computer.

If you are unsure of whether or not your computer should be totaled or repaired, bring it in to South City Computer for expert honest computer repair advice. We can give you an estimate of what your computer is worth based on market value, and let you know about what the repair cost is that your will incur on the computer.

Support for Windows XP Ends in Less Than a Month

Posted by

Microsoft released Windows XP in 2001, and it was arguably the most popular Windows operating system ever. In fact, it still is extremely popular. 11% of people who are visiting web applications still use Windows XP. Unfortunately, Windows XP is about to be put out of support by Microsoft.

“Out of support” can be kind of a vague description of what is actually happening. Microsoft ending support means that no more software compatible with XP will be released, and none of the software you have installed will recieve updates. These updates include critical security patches that protect your computer from viruses. When these updates stop being issued, more and more vulnerabilities will be discovered, but will never be corrected.

This is why it is important to upgrade your system. With support ending next month, it is critical that you do this as soon as possible!

You have two options when it comes to upgrading.

  • Purchase a new PC
If your computer still runs Windows XP, it may be time just to replace it. South City Computer can offer you help in finding a new computer suitable for your needs. We can also transfer your personal files from your old computer to a new one so that you don’t lose anything in the process.
  • Upgrade your current computer’s software
Some computers that currently run Windows XP are capable of running a newer version of Windows. These computers are generally ones that were extra powerful when initially purchased, or computers that were purchased towards the end of the Windows XP era. If you’re wondering whether or not your computer can be upgraded, just give us a call or drop by our store in the St. Louis City Lindenwood Park neighborhood.

Some other Windows End of Support dates to consider:
Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows Vista on April 10, 2012. Microsoft will end mainstream support for Windows 7 on January 13, 2015. Also Microsoft Windows Vista end of extended support will end April 11, 2017. Learn more about the end of Windows lifecycle here.

There are bigger and better things than Windows XP today. So, this is the end. If you’ve stuck with XP until now, you need to get upgraded. Because, trust me, you don’t want to be there when support ends.

What you should do if liquid spills into your laptop computer

Posted by

There’s nothing better than coffee and computing in the morning (if you ask me). However I recently learned, “the hard way”, that coffee and computers do NOT directly mix well. I accidentally spilled my cup of coffee into the keyboard of my laptop computer. Water, coffee, tea, soda, and other liquids can be VERY DAMAGING to laptop computers.

Often people will have a drink next to their computer for ease of staying hydrated during a long computer session. While this is a convenient indulgence, it also is risky behavior. If you are like me, you are bound to bump the desk/table or drink container to the point of it spilling all over the place, and most likely into your laptop computer. Unless you have a tough-book or a waterproof computer this will cause serious damage.

What you should do if you spill liquid into your laptop computer:

  1. LEAVE THE COMPUTER OPEN, DO NOT CLOSE THE SCREEN. In order to avoid damaging any other hardware on the computer (such as the screen). Leave the computer in the open position.
  2. UNPLUG IT RIGHT NOW!!!!! First things first, just stop the electricity from traveling to the computer. But be careful not to get electrocuted. Your life is worth more than your iTunes collection, or your work documents.
  3. POP OUT THE BATTERY!!!! Hurry!!! cut off all electricity from the computer. Most likely you will have to tip the computer over to accomplish this, be careful to not damage the screen since you should leave the computer in the open position. It is a fact of nature that electricity and water do not mix at all. The computer is bound to malfunction due to the liquid touching the motherboard.
  4. TIP THE OPEN COMPUTER OVER SO THE SCREEN AND KEYBOARD FACE DOWN, if you haven’t already while removing the battery. Be sure the computer is in the open position so that the excess liquid can drain out the way it came in. The most important thing to do to try to salvage the computer is to get the computer completely dry again.
  5. Take out the hard drive. Most likely the hard drive is still dry, but to avoid any moisture damage take it out while you have the computer turned over. Even if the computer is shot, the data may still be intact on the hard drive. After you get the hard drive popped out, go ahead and put the hard drive into a dry paper bag or container and completely cover the hard drive with dry rice. DO NOT PLUG YOUR HARDRIVE INTO ANY OTHER COMPUTER FOR AT LEAST 72 HOURS OR LONGER IF YOU CAN WAIT.
  6. Let the laptop dry out completely. Leave the computer unplugged from the wall and the battery out in the open position for at least 72 hours. I would even recommend longer just to be sure. If you are savvy with your computer hardware, you may even want to take the keyboard off the computer in order to open up the computer so it may dry out faster. However this is probably a job better left to the professionals at South City Computer since we have the tools and expertise to take apart most laptop computers including Apple Mac computers.

At this point it is probably best to have a computer technician at South City Computer diagnose the computer to determine if it the laptop can be salvage, and also determine if the data on the hardrive can be salvaged.

Most importantly don’t beat yourself up! Accidents happen it is a fact of life. Just stay calm and cool since the ultimate outcome of the computer is unknown until the South City Computer technician can diagnose the state of the laptop computer.

Can’t create new folder virus

Posted by

Right-click, new, and…. the folder option is missing? Ctrl+Shift+N but all you get is a quick thinking mouse icon before nothing happens.

Not being able to create a new folder can be very annoying, a big waste of your time, and an almost paralyzing experience in a users computer work-flow. Whether it was a virus that caused it or an Adobe update the result is the same, no new folders.

There is no quick fix to this problem, for the average user, as most of the time it resides in Registry of a computer. This problem stems from this subkey:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\New\

Editing your registry can cause serious damage to the system and cause many core components of Windows not to work correctly. I would not change anything in the registry unless you create a backup and are very comfortable with it.

DIY Fix

This problem is just a symptom and is most commonly caused by either a virus or the latest Adobe update. The first thing you should do is scan you computer with an anti-virus software. If it comes up clean you can try to uninstall the latest update for Adobe and then reinstall it. If your computer does however have a virus then you will not be able to create new folders until the registry problem is fixed. If any of this was too complicated or you just don’t want to risk further damage you can always  bring your computer into South City Computer and we will easily remove the virus, tune up your computer, and fix any problems you have.

How to recover a deleted file

Posted by

Accidents happen, it is a fact of life. Don’t worry, it may NOT be too late to get your erased file(s) back after you accidentally deleted it. Here is what you can do to try to recover your lost or deleted file.

First you need to STOP using the computer right now. That means turn it off completely by shutting it down the way computer manufacturer recommended.

The techs at Ivanhoe Computers can recover most files after they were deleted as long as the deletion of the file(s) happened recently. Bring the computer to our store located at 3235 Ivanhoe Ave. in St. Louis MO 63139. Or give us a call 314-400-7918. Get your deleted file back now!

We understand how frustrating it can be to make a simple mistake that costs you BIG time. Or does it? Your deleted file may seem to be erased completely from your hardrive, but actually it has probably just been hidden from the Windows operating system. The Operating System keeps a directory of files and their locations on the hardrive, you can think of it like a phone book. When the computer deletes a file, it actually just removed the record in the “phone book”. Our expert computer technicians can usually find your recently deleted file, and probably lots of other files you have deleted recently.

Customer Stories

We had a customer, Tim, who had a disgruntle girlfriend, Rachel, who deleted images of Tim’s vacation to Costa Rica with an ex-lover. While Rachel probably thought she had won this battle; she was wrong. Our computer support experts and repair technicians were able to retrieve the images from Tim’s hardrive after they had been deleted by Rachel. Tim ended up recovering his memories stored in digital format, even though Rachel had deleted his prized files. While we don’t usually give relationship advice, we advised Tim that it may be time for Rachel to have her own account on Tim’s computer.

Stanly was working on his final term paper at the end of the semester. He had procrastinated until the very last minute to do the assignment, and was in a total crunch for time to get it done. Unfortunately when we are most pressed for time, we can and usually make silly mistakes that cost us BIG time. Stanly worked on the paper for 18 hours straight, and then somehow forgot to save it, or forgot where he saved it. Stanly knew his professor was never going to believe this story. Stanly was extremely irritated at himself, and decided to see if a local computer repair place could help him. Luckily he was right! Our computer support technicians were able to recover the “lost” term paper, along with many other files that had been deleted from the computer recently. While we couldn’t guarantee Stanly an A on the term paper, we could save him some time, and heartache.

Give us a chance, we can probably support your computer data recovery needs too!

Simple steps to take before computer repairThis is a quick check list of simple steps you can do before you bring your computer to us for diagnostic and repair services:

  1. Do you have the Recovery CD(s) that came with the computer. With newer computers there may be a recovery partition on the hardrive. We can order recovery CDs for most makes/models of computers, however its quicker if you have the recovery CDs when you bring the computer in for service.
  2. Bring the power cord for your laptop computer. That is usually the only chord we will need to perform the computer repair. If your desktop computer uses a non-standard power cable, be sure to bring it with the computer.
  3. Have you been backing up your data? We will need to know if you need the data on the hardrive recovered (if possible). It’s a good idea to have a backup plan in place. Talk to a our computer technicians about a backup and recovery strategy that will work for you.
  4. What are the problems you are experiencing. While we do not expect you to be up on your “geek speak”, be specific and descriptive about the issue(s) you are experiencing when using your PC. Let the tech know the types of software that you are running when the issue occurs.
  5. How old is your computer? Knowing the approximate age of your computer can help our technician identify the version of Windows or Mac OS is installed on your computer, and also which Windows service pack your computer is on. It also will help our technician to discuss with you the benefit of fixing your computer problem, or assisting you to select a replacement computer that is right for you, and then help you to migrate your personal data to your new computer.
  6. Be prepared to pay a fee for our service up front. Most professional computer repair stores ask for money before they begin work. Usually we request you pay for the time it takes a technician to diognose your computer issue and prepare a repair estimate.
  7. Reset your password before you bring your computer to South City Computer if you still are able to. We recommend setting it to something like “temp1234”. We respect your privacy and do not need to know your private passwords.
  8. Getting your computer repaired can seem like a daunting task, but taking these few simple steps before bringing your computer in for repair service could make your repair go much faster.

Virus Removal

A Computer Virus on a Windows PCUnfortunately the Internet is like the “Wild West” when it comes to computer safety, privacy, and data security. Many computers become infected with malware such as viruses and spyware by viewing email attachments, sharing files, or by visiting infected websites. Some viruses are meant to scam you out of money, steal your identity, or even convert your computer into a network node for illegal activity. Your computer could be hacked into a phishing websites, an email spam server, or part of a network for transferring illegal content across the Internet without your knowledge. If you use the Microsoft Windows operating system then you are probably all too familiar with computer viruses, and have probably even gotten one in the past that may have caused damage to your computer. However recently computer viruses have been found that infect other operating systems such as Mac OS and Android.

You may notice your computer has a virus because it seems to run really slow, is showing pop-ups, appears to be using an Internet proxy, or has seemingly pointless software programs launched. However you could be unaware that your computer is infected with a virus, as some viruses run “silently” in the background acting as a node in a larger distributed bot network attempting malicious tasks such as denial of service DOS attacks. It is important to check your computer periodically for viruses and if you are using Microsoft Windows to to have an active anti-virus software running with up-to-date virus definitions as well as running Microsoft Windows updates to have the most up to date security patches.

South City Computer can sometimes remove virus, trojans, worms, and spyware from infected dekstops, laptops, tablets, and phones. Depending on the severity of the malware infections it may be possible for our technicians to remove a virus from your computer without affecting the rest of your computer and without any data loss. However some computer viruses can do too much damage to the registry and system files that it is beyond a simple virus removal. Viruses can even infect or corrupt your computer’s restore partition making it impossible to recover your computer to the factory default settings without restore CD media. It is important that you create your own restore media for your computer when it is new in case your recovery partition gets infected or corrupted by a computer virus.

The Microsoft recommended way to remove a virus from an infected computer is to perform a full operating system restore to reset the computer back to the factory defaults using a recovery partition or restore media. Most computers have a recovery partition on the hard drive that can be accessed using a series of key strokes during boot or by using the Windows Boot Option Menu available by holding shift and choosing to restart the computer. A recovery partition is sometimes the only way to recover most computers.

In order to remove a virus from an infected computer the South City Computer technician will back up all of your important user data (if possible and requested), and perform a complete operating system re-installation to restore your computer back to the manufacturer default factory settings to ensure the virus has been removed completely. All previously installed programs such as Microsoft Word will have been lost and will need to be reinstalled at this time.

If your computer’s recovery partition has been infected with a virus and you do not have your restore media South City Computer can usually order your factory restore media for you at an additional cost, and it can add some extra time to the overall computer repair.
